The Solo Entrepreneur Era is Now
What We Learned at the FreshBooks event in Dallas
By Dallas Black Bloggers
What happens when you put a room full of entrepreneurs from completely different industries together?
You get conversations about money, growth, access, challenges—and what it really takes to build a business.

That was the energy at the recent FreshBooks event in Dallas. This was an event where entrepreneurs, creatives, and small business owners came together for a day centered around one thing we can all relate to: building a business that actually works.
The conversations went beyond just having a great idea or a strong social media presence.
We discussed knowing your numbers, how to keep up with your clients, making sure you are getting paid, how to manage your expenses, and hosting a business that can continue to grow with you.
Meet Faye Pang
One of the highlights of the evening was hearing from Faye Pang, who is the Chief Growth Officer at FreshBooks.
FreshBooks has been around for 24 years, beginning in Toronto, Canada. But Faye’s connection to the challenges facing entrepreneurs is personal.

Having worked in her family’s business for years, she saw firsthand some of the challenges that small business owners face. This challenge continues to impact entrepreneurs today: access to capital.
That experience helped shape her perspective on why tools and resources designed specifically for small businesses matter.
Sometimes, entrepreneurs simply need better access to the right tools, resources, connections, and capital to move their businesses forward.
"This is the era of the Solo Entrepreneur, and now is the time to take advantage of it," Faye Pang shared.
And honestly? We felt that.
Creators and freelancers are entrepreneurs.
The creator turning their audience into a business is an entrepreneur.
You may be the CEO, marketing assistant, accountant, salesperson, project manager, and the customer service representative all at once.
That's why having systems in place matters.

One of the biggest takeaways from the conversation was simple: Know your numbers!
Faye specifically encouraged entrepreneurs to stay on top of their expenses, saying:
“Manage your expenses. Review them on a weekly basis and don't let them pile up.”
It's simple advice, but it's easy to overlook when you're busy running the business.
That's where FreshBooks comes in.
FreshBooks is an accounting and business management platform designed to help entrepreneurs get paid, manage their finances, and deliver their work all in one place.
The platform can help business owners keep track of things like:
Invoices and payments
Business expenses
Client information
Projects and client work
Overall business finances
For the solo entrepreneur wearing multiple hats, having those pieces organized can make a major difference.
The Room was Just as Valuable as the Conversation
One of our favorite parts of the day wasn't actually sitting on the panel. It was getting to meet the people in the room.
FreshBooks organized breakout sessions that gave attendees the opportunity to connect, talk about their businesses, and learn more about one another.
At one table, we had real estate agents, a makeup artist, a professional ballerina, a second-generation landscaper, and marketing professionals.
Different industries. Different experiences. Different business models.
However, we all had something in common: we're building.
And that's something we believe strongly in here at Dallas Black Bloggers.
What This Means for Our DBB Community
At DBB, we spend a lot of time talking about the creative side of entrepreneurship; content creation, influencing, collaborations, personal brands, events, and visibility.
But the business behind the brand matters just as much.
If you're building a platform and turning your expertise into a revenue stream, the infrastructure behind your business matters.
The goal is to build something sustainable.
And that means getting comfortable with the numbers, creating systems, managing your clients, and understanding exactly what's happening inside your business.
